SCHOOLS RUGBY

Programme description

Macau Rugby launched it’s School programme in 2021, to promote the sport in local schools. Due to the constraint of school venues, the club uses Touch Rugby and T1 Rugby to build player enthusiasm and knowledge of the sport. This provides a pathway for schools to develop teams and players to come into competitive rugby.

The programme is built on local coaches going to schools with a defined skills and playing approach. The game promotes discipline, self-control, team working, respect, resilience and integrity amongst the players. As more schools have joined, the club has developed a schools championship which will further grow in the future.

The Try Together approach aims to develop more coaches within schools and PE departments to enable further expansion of rugby across the school. Macau Rugby is pleased to have Asia Rugby and Emirates as fellow partners in this endeavour.

Benefits of Rugby

Rugby is based upon teamwork and players have to quickly develop good communication skills and support team cohesion. At the same time they must acquire their individual skills, fitness and sporting prowess.

The game promotes discipline, self-control, team working, respect, resilience and integrity amongst the players and towards opponents and referees. These are good skills for players to learn and then apply throughout all areas of their lives.

All players and coaches are part of a larger community, locally and across the region.

Participation, fitness and completion are all encouraged and learning comes both from defeat and victory.

The sport is growing in local schools and the new school league will further encourage that.
